Crier conundrum
Published Date:

I'M sure many Gazette readers will remember David Mitchell, the present British Champion of the Loyal Company of Town Criers; which he won in Alnwick last July with his superb cry referring (often!) to Keira Knightley? Well, he's contacted me with a conundrum. He was doing some research when he came across the item below and he would love a translation! Can any readers help?
When Thomas Kirke, an antiquary from Cookridhge in the West Riding, was up at Berwick in May 1677, he was utterly bemused by the bellman proclaiming the death of a local man in the streets: "He liggs aut thi sext dour wethin the hoord gawt closs on the hauthir haund, and I wod yaw gang to his (burial] before twa a clock."
If anyone can help, contact me at enquiries@alnwicktowncrier.co.uk and I'll be happy to pass on any information gleaned from your very knowledgeable lot.
John Stevens,
Common Bellman
