I WISH to congratulate the writer of the letter entitled "Where's the common sense?" in last weeks Gazette.
It was so true and supports my theory that some people who visit our beautiful coast line never give any thought to its dangers.
Just up the coast we have the idiots who get trapped in the sea trying to cross to Holy Island in their cars and at eac
h end there are plenty of signs warning of its dangers.
These people visiting, to my mind, don't give any thought to this wonderful county. They come up here in their Jesmond tractors and expect all of us to jump out of their way.
I have no doubt that a lot of young people learn to swim in nice warm swimming pools in their home towns, much to the pleasure of their parents, who fail to recognise that the North Sea is not centrally-heated and when their lovely children ask if they can swim in the inviting water, they say yes.
The parents' ignorance of the tidal flow, the dangerous currents and the sloping beaches is much the same as them saying to their child: "Yes you can play in Oxford Street in London, it's quite safe."
There is a very simple answer to the mother in the original article. If you love your children so much then keep them at home until you, their mother, learn not just how to make your child streetwise but also beach-wise.
In fact, don't blame others for your own ignorance. Stay away if you cannot look after your children.
Don't expect us or the district council to look after their safety. It is your responsibility.
You wanted children. You look after them.
