A NEW Christmas competition is coming to Alnwick this month.
Members of Longhoughton and Boulmer Women's Institute are holding a Christmas tree festival in a bid to raise some money for group funds.
The aim of the game is to decorate a festive fur, no taller than four feet.
The competition is open to busines
ses, charities and schools and the trees must be traditionally decorated or themed to a business.
For businesses, the competition costs £25 per tree, charities £10 a tree and schools are restricted to one free tree, to be displayed on tables.
There is limited space for trees larger than four feet but the cost is £35 per tree.
There will be prizes for the winner of each category and then an overall winner will be decided.
The event will be held in the Northumberland Hall, Alnwick, on Saturday, November 29 between 10am and 4pm. Setting up is from 9am.
Admission to the hall is £1 for adults, including mulled wine or juice and a mine pie. Supervised children go free. Members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite decorated tree.
Joan Ford, secretary of the WI said: "Our president Sheila Graham has a friend down south who is a vicar and he has a Christmas tree festival every year and it goes down very well.
"It will be something different for people to come and have a look at when they are doing their Christmas shopping.
"This is our first attempt at doing this sort of thing and we are initially hoping to raise enough funds to support our WI for the forthcoming year. But we would like to make it an annual event and if it takes off we would certainly look at the possibility of raising funds this way for various charities."
To take part contact Joan Ford on 01665 577957 or email joane.ford@btinternet.com with the number of trees, the cost and which category you want to enter.
