ALNWICK'S international footballers Lucy Bronze and Lucy Staniforth have helped put England on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup Quarter-Finals.
The football pair both featured in England U17 Women's Group D 1-0 win over Nigeria yesterday (Sunday).

The victory puts unbeaten England at the top of their group. A draw against Korea Republic on Wednesday, or a draw against group opponents Brazil and Nigeria, would see England through to the last eight.

A 78th minute goal from Jessica Holbrook sunk Nigeria as the Lionesses made it two wins out of two.

Lucy Bronze started the match and was replaced midway through the second-half. Lucy Staniforth came off the bench late on for England.

England Head Coach, Lois Fidler, told www.fifa.com: "In terms of the physical qualities of the Nigerian side, we always knew this was going to be a tough match, and it was. I didn't see the goal coming, to be honest!

"The back four were outstanding today, for the second game in a row. We're not taking anything for granted for the Korea (Republic] game, either in terms of results or preparation...we're not through yet!"

Visit the website on Wednesday, or read Thurday's Northumberland Gazette, to see how the Lucys got on in their final Group D encounter against Korea Republic. The match kicks-off 6am English time on Wednesday.
