HUSBAND and wife partnership Margaret and Ken Gardiner won the Alnwick Bowling Club open two bowl pairs competition on Sunday.
In the final after 66 ends there was only one shot in it as they beat another Alnwick pair of Ken Liddle and Roger Turnbull 11-10. The teams went into the final end all square. Ken Gardiner drew the winning shot with his last bowl to take the cup at
the event sponsored by MKM building supplies.

Beaten semi-finalists were George Turner and Dougie Miller and Roger and Dorothy Wumphrey from High Heaton.

If Ken Liddle had been the winner he would have had a clean sweep of all the open Alnwick competitions this year, having previously won the four bowl pairs and the triples competitions.

However, he is having a good year. He reached the final of the Duke's Medal for the club championship after beating Bob Bingham and will be hoping for his first title as he takes on six times former winner John Hume, who is making his third consecutive final appearance after he beat George Batey.

In the North Northumberland league Alnwick are runner's up- after drawing with this year's champion Amble four points all.

In the Northumberland County leagues Alnwick continue to struggle. In the Nines, in a rearranged game, they drew with High Heaton, sharing eight points, went down eight nil to Ponteland and the Clegg Cup team fared no better on a very heavy green at Walker losing 14-0.

The only friendly of the week against Seahouses fell victim to the weather when it was rained off.
